Recent Trends in the Theory and Practice of Diplomacy
外交理论与实践的新趋势
The current international relations system teeters on the edge of an abyss. In these dangerous times, there has never been a greater need for diplomacy, the ‘business of peace’, the ‘dialogue between states,’ and the great ‘engine room’ of international affairs at a time. This talk argues and proves that the ancient institution of diplomacy is ideally placed to minimize rising friction in international relations. Over the past decade there have also been some extremely positive developments in the theory and practice of diplomacy. This talk explains and reviews several new innovations: anthropology and diplomacy, traditional diplomacy, digital diplomacy, secret diplomacy, sports diplomacy and, last but not least, human diplomacy, that is, the business of a human negotiating his or her way through an increasingly complex life. Diplomacy, as this talk illustrates, is the only way forward for people, nations and states to avoid yet another century of violence, separation and division.
