Carlin Romano is "Distinguished Visiting Scholar" at the Institute for Advanced Humanistic Studies at Peking University for the Spring, 2014 semester, anda John Simon Guggenheim Fellow for 2013-14.
In the U.S., Romano is Professor of Philosophy and Humanities at Ursinus College and Critic-at-Large of The Chronicle of Higher Education, the international newspaper of academe based in Washington. D.C. Formerly the longtime Literary Critic and Editor of The Philadelphia Inquirer, the main daily newspaper of Philadelphia, he has been a Finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Criticism
, cited by the Pulitzer Board for "bringing new vitality to the classic essayacross a formidable array of topics."
In 2012, he published America the Philosophical (Alfred A. Knopf), a 672-pagestudy of philosophy in American life. The New York Times Book Review, in a front-page review, described it as “ambitious" and "convincing," "an encyclopedic survey of the life of the mind in the United States.” Romano earned hisdegrees at Princeton, Yale and Columbia and has taught philosophy and media
theory at Yale, the University of Pennsylvania and Russia's St. Petersburg State University, among other institutions. He is also the editor and a contributor to Philadelphia Noir, a volume of original noir short stories in the acclaimed international Akashic Books series.
